Berkeley Lab Puts a Hard Number on Data Center Power Demand

How it leans Measurement only · Government lab (DOE / Berkeley Lab)

What's documented Federally funded national lab measurement, peer-reviewed methodology, no industry sponsor and no policy ask.

The 2024 United States Data Center Energy Usage Report, prepared by Berkeley Lab for the Department of Energy, is the reference dataset behind the entire debate. It measures, rather than projects, what data centers actually consumed, then bounds the near-term growth. Use it to sanity-check any cost claim: the load is real and large, but it is a single-digit share of national demand today.
